COMNEWS draws up the results of ICT Investments Forum 2014


On Feb.27th 2014 Moscow Holiday Inn Suschevsky hotel became the venue of the 4th International ICT Investments Forum 2014 - Venture and Direct Investment. Lending. IPO. M&A, organized by COMNEWS. Constanta Capital and Russian Corporate Telecom Regatta had Partner and J'son & Partners Consulting – Research Partner status at the event.

The Forum was endorsed by the Association of Computer and Information Technologies, International Telecommunications Academy, Association of Regional Telecom Operators, Russian Association of Electronic Communications, National Association Business-Angels, Moscow Business School, National Investment Association, Sodruzhestvo Association of Professional Accountants, Telecompass consulting agency and Moscow region’s Centre for Entrepreneurship Development. More than 50 media provided information support to the event.

Key topics of ICT Investments Forum 2014 were:
  • M&A: which attractive assets are still available in the market?
  • Which models of ICT assets are attractive for investors?
  • Bank financing in the ICT industry: How to reverse the situation to your benefit?

The Forum was kicked off by Alexey Shestoperov, Deputy Director of SME and Competition Department of Russian Ministry of Economic Development, who presented a review of the key focal areas of the national policy for IT development and the financial tools employed by the Ministry of Economic Development to support these efforts.

Maria Novitskaya, Head of Marketing at Telecompass Consulting Agency, opened the first session: “M&A market: Growth or stagnation?” with a report about investment risk assessment. Yaroslava Zabella, Head of Research centre at AK&M, delivered an overview of the M&A market in the telecom industry. Mikhail Romanov, Partner and Head of Telecom, Media and Hi-Tech Practice at Ernst & Young (CIS) spoke about the trends in the Russian and global venture markets. The report of Marina Treschova, CEO and co-founder of Fastlane Ventures, was dedicated to a challenging choice for a strategic investor – develop own telecom solutions or acquire start-ups.  Case-study “LTE 1800 as an attractive direct investment project” was presented by Alexander Kurochkin, CEO of SMARTS.

After a short break, the topic of M&A in telecom was taken up by the round table entitled “M&A: are there any attractive assets left in the market?” which brought together Georgy Nikolsky, Partner at Constanta Capital; Alexey Ailarov, CEO of Zingaya Inc.; Alexander Kurochkin, CEO of SMARTS, Leonid Nikitin, Managing Partner at Blaze Consulting; Pavel Pozdnyakov, Commercial Director of INOVENTICA Group; Vyatcheslav Reshetko,CFA, Deputy CEO for M&A at Virgin Connect, and Mikhail Romanov, Partner and Head of Telecom, Media and Hi-Tech Practice at Ernst & Young (CIS). Life story “How we decided to do business together” told on behalf of Gars Telecom, Nauka-Svyaz and TVISTAR by Mikhail Sergeev, Corporate Communications Director of Gars Telecom Group, sparked keen interest in the audience.

The second session of the Forum was dedicated to the issues of attracting government, venture and direct investment into the ICT. It was opened by Vladimir Baydin, Director of Corporate Finance Department at J’son and Partners Consulting. Alexey Barinsky, Senior Investment Director of QIWI Group,  spoke about the role of venture investor in post-investment support.Alexey Lupachev, Director of Russia Partners, described the ICT market through the eyes of private equity funds. Gennady Margolit, Executive Director of Innovation and Investment Market of Moscow Exchange, spoke about the role of infrastructure in raising venture capital for hi-tech companies.

The Forum ended with a discussion about the principles of effective investment policy and models of investment attractive ICT assets. Panelists included Eduard Ashrafyan, Vice-President for Corporate Finance of Financial Consulting Group; Vladimir Baydin, Director of Corporate Finance Department at J’son and Partners Consulting; Alexey Barinsky, Senior Investment Director of QIWI Group; Alexey Basov, Vice-President of Rostelecom; Konstantin Los, Senior Innovations Manager at Promsvyazbank; Roman Kuzmin, CEO of Molotok.ru trading site; Alexander Lupachev, Director of Russia Partners; Gennady Margolit, Executive Director of Innovation and Investment Market of Moscow Exchange; Andrey Novikov, Vice-President for Corporate Development of Eruditor Group; Maxim Shekhovtsov, Founder and Managing Partner of Genezis Capital.

The Forum concluded with a reception where the guests continued networking in an informal format, exchanging ideas and making new business contact.
